SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -
California junior swimmer Caitlin Leverenz successfully defended her crown at Cal Poly's Queen of the Pool meet on Friday at Anderson Aquatic Center. The reigning queen for three consecutive seasons, Leverenz posted the lowest combined time of 4:45.12 - almost three seconds faster than last year's 4:48.03 - among the assembled Golden Bears and Mustangs after swimming in five 100-yard events.
Leverenz swam the fastest time in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.65) and 100-yard individual medley (56.79).
A member of the U.S. national team that swam at the World Championships this past summer, Leverenz is a multi-talented swimmer who was an All-American in the 200 and 400 IMs and the 200 breaststroke and also won national titles with Cal's 200 and 400 medley relays at the 2011 NCAA Championships.
The top 13 finishers were Golden Bears. The rest of the top five consisted of senior Liv Jensen, who was second with a time of 4:48.78, sophomore Melissa Bates (third, 4:51.31), freshman Catherine Breed (fourth, 4:51.58) and senior Sara Isakovic (fifth, 4:51.66).
Jensen won the 100 freestyle (50.23), Isakovic captured the 100 butterfly (54.98) and sophomore Cindy Tran, the defending NCAA champion in the 100 backstroke, won the 100 back (55.45).
"This was a great start," said Cal and 2012 U.S. Olympic head coach Teri McKeever. "The senior class did an excellent job. The freshmen had some tough racing and raised the bar for the team. Caitlin lowered the school-best time here and is the three-year champion."
The Bears are back in the pool for tomorrow's relays at Cal Poly.
