California Sees 16 Stroke Improvement in Second Round

Sept. 24, 2011

FRANKLIN, Tenn. -

The California Golden Bear women's golf team posted a 290 in the second round of the Mason Rudolph Fall Preview, a score 16 strokes better than their first round total. Sophomore Nicola Roessler led the team with a one-under 71.

California was one of many schools to drop their scores out of the 300's in the second round of play, but few had such a dramatically better second round. The Bears began the day in 15th place and moved up to ninth at the end of the second round after logging a team score of +2 for the second 18 holes.

Leading the charge up the leaderboard was sophomore Nicola Roessler. Roessler's first-round 83 was the uncounted fifth score for Cal in the first round. In the second round, Roessler shot a one-under 71.

Senior Joanne Lee also improved her second round score, shooting an even-par 72. Senior Daniela Holmqvist matched her first-round one-over 73. She still has the lowest overall total for the Bears, entering the final round in a tie for 15th place.

UCLA leads with a two-day total of 579. Cal's two day tally is 596. They are three strokes behind host-school Vanderbilt in eighth place and four strokes off seventh place USC's pace.

The tournament, which is being played on the same course that the 2012 NCAA National Championships will be played, the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn., will wrap up with a third and final round on Sunday, Sept. 25. Live Scoring will be available through Golfstat.
