FRANKILN, Tenn. -
The California Golden Bears finished the Mason Rudolph Fall Preview, a tournament featuring the top teams in golf, in tenth place. Senior Emily Childs had the low round of the day for Cal, shooting a one-under 71.
The UCLA Bruins won the team title, finishing with a total of 873, six strokes better than second-place Alabama. Duke's Lindy Duncan defeated Alabama's Jennifer Kirby on the first playoff hole after both players finished at 212 (-4).
The tournament was held at the Vanderbilt Legends Club course (par 72 - 6426 yards). The course, in Franklin, Tenn., will be the site of the 2012 NCAA Championships.
For the Bears, the team posted a 297 in the final round and finished at +29 with a total score of 893.
Senior Emily Childs became the third different Cal golfer to card the low round for the squad during the three day tournament. Childs birdied two of her last three holes to come in with the one-under 71. She had the second lowest overall score for the Bears, finishing at +7, in a tie for 26th place.
Senior Daniela Holmqvist was the lowest overall score for Cal, finishing at +4 and tying for 16th place.
"Aside from our first round, we were pretty solid," said head coach Nancy McDaniel. "We were reminded that we cannot start a tournament flat in and NCAA Championship field and expect to fully make up for it. Under-par rounds from Nico [Nicola Roessler] and Emily [Childs] were encouraging. Dani's [Daniela Holmqvist] consistent play really helped to pace us through rounds two and three. We are in need of some good preparation before leaving for Washington on Saturday."
The Bears next tournament is the Edean Ihlandfeldt in Sonomish, Wash. on Oct. 2-4. The Bears and Emily Childs were last year's team champion and individual medalist at the tournament.
