IRVINE, CALIF. -
No. 4-ranked Cal overcame a 4-3 deficit after the first period to comeback and top Arizona State, 8-5, Saturday (Feb. 25) in the Golden Bears' second match of the UCI Invitational at Corona del Mar. Cal, which outscored the Sun Devils, 5-1, in the final three periods, was led by two goals apiece from junior Remington Price and sophomore Ashley Young, while junior goalie Lindsay Dorst recorded nine saves.
The Bears improved to 2-0 at the UCI Invite after defeating UC Santa Barbara, 7-3, in the morning match and went to 14-2 for the season. Cal will next play No. 1-ranked and Bay Area rival Stanford in the tournament semifinal on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 10:30 a.m. at UC Irvine's Anteater Pool. Last season the Bears fell to the Cardinal, 9-5, in the national championship match.
Against Arizona State, Cal also received goals from freshman Victoria Williams, freshman Tiera Schroeder, junior All-American Dana Ochsner and sophomore Kelly Mendoza.
In the morning match versus UCSB, Ochsner and junior All-American Breda Vosters paced the Bears with two goals apiece.
Vosters, the Bears' leading scorer with 27 goals in 13 matches, was a third-team All-American, while Ochsner notched second-team All-America honors in 2011. Other scorers for Cal against the Gauchos included Young, senior Elizabeth McLaren and Price with single goals. Dorst played the first half and registered six saves. Freshman Savanna Smith played the final two quarters and tallied four saves.
The Bears had a slim 3-2 lead after the first period, but then outscored the Gauchos, 4-1, the rest of the way for the 7-3 victory. Cal had defeated UCSB, 11-7, back on Jan. 22 at the Spartan Invitational in San Jose
