SEATTLE, Wash. - Deborah Maier captured the women's 3000 meters in a meet-record 9:02.35 and Chelsea Reilly set a school mark in the women's mile during the concluding day of competition at the MPSF Indoor Track & Field Championships Saturday.

The Cal women finished sixth in the final team standings, while the Golden Bear men were 10th.

Maier, who ran the second-fastest time in school history and beat her previous PR by nearly 18 seconds, outdueled Oregon's Jordan Hasay to the line. Hasay, the 2011 NCAA champion in the 3000, was more than a second back in 9:03.95. Both runners were under the old meet record of 9:08.15 from 2009 by Laurynne Chetelat, then competing for Stanford.

Maier has down defeated Hasay in their last two head-to-head meetings. At the Flotrack Husky Classic two weeks ago, Maier ran 15:29.24 in the 5000 meters to Hasay's 15:45.54.

The title was Maier's second in the 3000 at the MPSF meet. In 2010, she won in a then-school-record 9:20.05 despite falling down midway through the race.

"Deborah Maier's performance to win the 3000 was special, considering she was coming back on the second day after a 4:34 leg on the DMR last night," Cal's director of track & field Tony Sandoval said.

In addition to Maier, Taylor Bryson had a 10-second PR with her time of 9:30.21. She won her 3000-meter section race by 10 seconds and placed 12th overall.

Reilly set her second Cal record of the year, reclaiming the top spot in the mile with a time of 4:41.29 as she finished third in the race. Her mark lowered the record of 4:41.47 run by Sofia Oberg Jan. 28. Reilly entered the year with the Golden Bear mark, having posted a time of 4:48.89 during the 2010 season. Earlier this season, Reilly ran the 3000 meters in 9:00.86, setting the school mark and earning an automatic berth into the NCAA Championships.

Bryson (4:47.60) and Taylor Dutch (4:47.65) also set PRs in the mile, Both were under Reilly's initial record prior to the start of the 2012 campaign, which places them 3-4, respectively, on Cal's all-time list.

Oberg, meanwhile, just missed an NCAA automatic invitation with her fourth-place showing in the 800 meters. She finished in a PR 2:05.32, less than a second off the national qualifying time of 2:04.50.

In the men's 3000 meters, Collin Jarvis lowed his lifetime best by two seconds to 7:53.43 to take fourth place. The time was just over a second off the NCAA automatic mark. Jarvis continues to rank as the No. 2 performer in Cal history behind only Michael Coe's school record of 7:48.05 from 2009.

"I thought the Golden Bears responded to the added competition of BYU, Colorado and Utah to the MPSF meet," Sandoval said. "Without question, this was the most competitive MPSF meet ever. The distances were truly exceptional with a national leader in every event except for one. We had a number of personal bests and season bests to reflect the focus and competitiveness of the team. Newcomers Derrick White (weight throw) and Jonte Grant (long jump) had eye-opening performances considering it was their first championship meet."

Elsewhere, Angelica Weaver took sixth in the women's 400 meters in 54.84, a .21-second improvement from her previous PR set on Jan. 28. In the men's high jump, three Bears - Brian Carmichael, Nick Ridge and Harrison Steed - cleared 6-9.50, but only Carmichael registered points in the team competition. Based on fewest misses, Carmichael was seventh, with Ridge ninth and Steed 10th.

Taylor Kientzel recorded his second lifetime best of the meet when he took sixth in the triple jump with a mark of 49-9.75. On Friday, he was fourth in the long jump (24-4.25)

The indoor season concludes with the NCAA Championships March 9-10 in Boise, Idaho. Maier (3000m, 5000m), Reilly (3000m) and the women's distance medley relay have all qualified, while several others could earn berths once the final invitations are extended.

"Malinda Peyton is right on the cusp of qualifying for NCAAs on the long jump," Sandoval said. "Colin Jarvis and Sofia Oberg just missed the automatic time on the 3000 and 800, respectively, so we'll have to wait and see whether their marks will qualify for the NCAA meet."

Cal's outdoor season gets underway next week when the Bears host the Outdoor Opener Saturday at Edwards Stadium.
