DURHAM, N.C. - The eighth-ranked California men's tennis team (7-7) fell, 6-1, to No. 5 Duke (11-2) on Sunday, March 11, at the Ambler Tennis Stadium. The Golden Bears scored their only point on a straight-set win by No. 40-ranked sophomore Ben McLachlan who defeated Raphael Hemmeler on court three, 6-1, 6-4. It was McLachlan's team-leading 18th overall singles win.

In the first doubles match off the courts, Duke's team of David Holland and Chris Mengel claimed an 8-2 win at court two against Ben McLachlan and Riki McLachlan. At the top court, Cal's fifth-ranked team of senior Nick Andrews and junior Christoffer Konigsfeldt put together their third straight victory (15th overall) when the Bears took out the Blue Devils' 15th-ranked duo of Henrique Cunha and Fred Saba, 8-6.

With the first dual point hanging in the balance, Cal's freshman team of Gregory Bayane and Andrew Scholnick pulled into a seven-all tie with Cale Hammond and Raphael Hemmeler on court three, but the Devils broke the Bears' serve to secure a 9-7 win and grab a 1-0 lead in the dual.

Duke took a 2-0 lead in the dual with a win at the top court where second-ranked Henrique Cunha defeated No. 94-ranked Andrews, 6-2, 6-0. Andrews' doubles partner Konigsfeldt suffered a loss at No. 5 singles to Jason Tahir, 6-1, 6-3, to give the Devils their third point of the day. On court two, 19th-ranked Mengel claimed a 6-2, 6-2 win over No. 39 junior Carlos Cueto to seal the victory for Duke.

With the match decided, Cal got on the board with Ben McLachlan's win. Down one court, Saba edged Bayane in the first set, 7-6, before he took a 6-2 win in the second to tack up Duke's fifth point. In the last match off the courts, Luke Marchese came back from dropping his first set to Riki McLachlan to win, 3-6, 7-5, 1-0, at No. 6 singles.

The Bears return home to host Minnesota in a Thursday-afternoon dual at the Hellman Tennis Complex on March 15 at 1:30 p.m. PT. Please visit CalBears.com for more information and links to live streaming video.
