SEATTLE - The ninth-ranked California women's tennis team (10-4, 3-0 Pac-12) took out No. 36 Washington (6-5, 0-2) at the Nordstrom Tennis Center on Friday, March 16, for its fourth straight dual victory. 17th-ranked freshman Zsofi Susanyi delivered the clinching point for the Golden Bears when she upended No. 11 Denise Dy, 6-3, 7-5, at the top court for her team-high 25th singles win of the year.
Cal won the doubles points for the 11th time, this season, with victories on the top two courts. At No. 1 doubles, senior
Jana Juricova returned for her first action since Feb. 12 to join Susanyi. The Bears' 38th-ranked duo defeated Dy and Samantha Smith, 8-4, on the top court to give Cal the upper hand. Cal secured the first point of the day when its 27th-ranked team of junior
Annie Goransson and sophomore
Anett Schutting defeated Capucine Gregoire and Andjela Nemcevic, 8-2, at No. 2 doubles.
With the first point doled out, a seven-all tie on the third doubles court moved into a tiebreaker. Washington's team of Julija Lukac and Riko Shimizu surrendered just one point to sophomore Alice Duranteau and freshman Cecilia Estlander as the Huskies won, 8-7, with a 7-1 score in the tiebreaker.
At No. 3 singles, No. 66 Schutting won her fifth straight singles match as she made short work of Smith in a 6-0, 6-1 win to give the Bears a 2-0 lead in the match. On court six, Washington got its only point of the day when Shimizu completed a 6-4, 6-3 win against senior Stephany Chang.
In her third-career match at court two, No. 100-ranked Goransson posted her fifth-straight singles win with a 6-3, 6-3 victory against Nemcevic to put the Bears in front, 3-1. Susanyi sealed the dual with her win at the top court, next, and paved the way for Cal's 6-1 win.
At court four, Duranteau gave the Bears a fifth point when she defeated Gregoire, 6-3, 7-6, with a 7-5 win in the second-set tiebreaker. Down one court, Estlander tacked on the final point of the day with a 6-3, 6-4 score against Lukac to become the fourth Cal player to reach 20 singles wins, this season.
Cal remains on the road for another Pac-12 dual as the Bears visit No. 68 Oregon (8-2, 0-1 Pac-12) for a noon PT dual on Saturday, March 17, at the Student Tennis Center in Eugene, Ore. Please visit CalBears.com for more information.
