March 20, 2012

SAN DIEGO - The No. 10 California Golden Bear women's golf team dropped nine strokes off their first round score to move up to fourth place, playing against some of the top teams in the nation at the Battle at the Rancho Bernardo Inn. Senior Daniela Holmqvist finished in the top-five.

The tournament, being played at the par-72, 6,267-yard Championship Golf Course at the Rancho Bernardo Inn, was shortened to two rounds of 18 holes after Sunday's action was cancelled because of weather and unplayable grounds. The Bears had a team total of 303 in the first round but rallied on Tuesday with a 294.

Seniors Daniela Holmqvist and Joanne Lee each shot even-par rounds on Tuesday to lead the team. Holmqvist was at even-par after the front nine. She birdied the par-5 12th to drop to one-under, but bogeyed 18 to finish even for the day. She finished the tournament at two-over, tying her for fourth place. Lee, who had a five-over 77 in the first round, also finished the front nine on Tuesday at even par. She bogeyed the par-three 11th, but then got a birdie on the par-four 16th to finish at even par. She had a top-20 finish among individuals, coming in tied for 15th at +5.

USC won the team title with a two-day total of 590. The Bears finished just seven strokes back at 597.

Sophia Popov of USC was the individual medalist with a pair of one-under 71's to finish at -2, four strokes ahead of Holmqvist.

The Bears will close out the month of March by heading to Hawaii, playing in the Maui Spring Invitational March 26-27.
