BERKELEY - The 10th-ranked California women's tennis team (12-4, 4-0 Pac-12) won its sixth straight match for the second time this season as 100th-ranked junior Annie Goransson completed a 6-1, 6-0 win against Sacramento State's Katharina Knoebl at No. 5 singles on Friday, March 23, at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The 69th-ranked Hornets fell to 9-9 on the season.

After a hard-fought trio of doubles matches, the Bears emerged with the first point of the day with wins on the top two courts. Sacramento State made the first move with a win at No. 3 doubles where Knoebl and Sophie Lohscheidt defeated junior Tayler Davis and sophomore Alice Duranteau, 8-3, but Cal responded to even the race for the doubles point with a win at court two.

At No. 2 doubles, the Bears' 27th-ranked team of Goransson and sophomore Anett Schutting erased a 3-0 deficit to go up, 5-3, against Rebeca Delgado and Tatsiana Kapshai. The Hornets fought back to earn a five-all tie before the Cal duo pulled away for an 8-6 win.

On the top court, the 38th-ranked team of senior Jana Juricova and freshman Zsofi Susanyi found itself down, 3-1, to open the match, but responded to claim a 7-5 lead against Clarisse Baca and Maria Meliuk. The Bears held off a late Hornet push to finish off an 8-5 win to secure the doubles point. It was the eighth straight win for Juricova and Susanyi and avenged their only loss of the season.

"We knew Sac State was going to be tough in doubles," said head coach Amanda Augustus. "I would have liked to have seen us come out a little stronger, but they have a good team and even though we haven't seen them in a while, we know what they are like and knew that we were going to be challenged, today."

Cal claimed a 2-0 lead in the dual off a quick win by No. 66-ranked Schutting who needed just 50 minutes at court three to complete a 6-0, 6-0 win against Baca. It was Schutting's seventh consecutive victory--her 25th win of the year--and made her the third Bear to reach the 25-win plateau, this season.

In her first match on her home courts since Jan. 27, sixth-ranked Juricova made short work of Kapshai at the top singles court as she posted a 6-0, 6-0 score to push Cal ahead to a 3-0 lead in the match. Down at No. 5 singles, No. 100 Goransson tacked up her seventh straight win on a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Knoebl to deliver the fourth point for the Bears and clinch the dual win.

On the even courts, Duranteau and No. 54-ranked Davis provided Cal's fifth and sixth points of the day as each earned their 20th singles wins of the year. Seven Bears now have at least 20 singles wins, this season. Duranteau came off the courts, first, with a 6-3, 6-2 win against Meliuk at No. 6 singles; her fifth straight win to date. Davis edged Lohscheidt, 7-5, in the first set, but showed her mettle as she came up with a 6-0 win in the second set to put the Bears in front, 6-0.

In the last match off the courts, No. 17-ranked Susanyi went to a third set against Delgado at No. 2 singles after she dropped her first set, 6-2, and won her second, 6-3. In the match tiebreaker, Susanyi went in front, 5-2, but Delgado roared back to knot things up at six all. Susanyi came alive after switching sides and earned a 9-6 lead before she finished off 10-7 win for Cal's seventh point of the day.

The Bears are back in action with a noon PT Pac-12 dual match against No. 38 Washington State (12-4, 2-2 Pac-12) on Saturday, March 24. Live scoring and streaming video available at CalBears.com.
