KAPALUA, Maui, Hawai'i - Fueled by a first round 68 by senior Daniela Holmqvist, the No. 8 California Golden Bear women's golf team took a three-stroke lead into the second round of the Anuenue Spring Break Classic at Kapalua on Maui. They will head into Tuesday's final round in second place, trailing Colorado by three strokes.
The Bears and the 13 other teams playing at the par-72, 6,022-yard Bay Course at the Kapalua Resort on the island of Maui, played two rounds of 18 holes on Monday, with the tournament concluding with a final round of 18 holes on Tuesday.
In the first round, senior Daniela Holmqvist started her day on the eighth hole in the tournament's shotgun start, carding a birdie on nine, the first of six on the day. Holmqvist was sitting at four-under with two holes remaining. She birdied the par-five sixth before giving back a stroke on her final hole, the par-four seventh, to finish with a four-under 68. She held a one-stroke lead over Alina Ching of Pepperdine heading into the second round.
Sophomore Nicola Roessler found herself in the top-10 with a tie for eighth place, shooting a two-over 74. Roessler, who started on the tenth hole, birdied two of her first four holes. After making the turn at even par, she finished with three bogeys and a birdie to come in at +2. Senior Joanne Lee was tied for 12th with a three-over 75. After going through her first ten holes at +1, Lee struggled on hole two, carding a triple bogey. She bounced right back, getting a birdie on three.
Junior Joi Pentin, playing as an individual, also shot a two-over 75 to finish the first round tied for 12th place.
In the second round, the Bears added just one stroke to the team total, shooting a 296, but Colorado dropped ten strokes off their first round score, carding a 289 to pull ahead with a three stroke lead.
Holmqvist held onto her lead, shooting a two-under 70 in the second round to lead the tournament at -6 (138). She holds a three-storke lead over Alina Ching of Pepperdine. Holmqvist birdied her first hole (8) and then closed out the long 36-hole day with back-to-back birdies on six and seven.
Joanne Lee had four birdies, two bogeys, and a double to card an even-par 72. She is in seventh place at +3.
Joi Pentin shot a 76 in her second round, tying for 24th place. Pentin started her second round by shooting an eagle three on the par-five 15th hole.
