Daniela Holmqvist Earns First Win as a Bear

March 27, 2012

KAPALUA, Maui, Hawai'i - Senior Daniela Holmqvist won the first collegiate tournament of her Golden Bear career, taking the medalist honors at the Auenue Spring Break Classic in Maui. The No. 8 Golden Bears finished second, three strokes behind Colorado playing the 6,022 yard, par-72 Kapalua Bay Course.

Holmqvist took the tournament lead in the first round, shooting a 68 in Monday's early round. In Monday's second round of 18 holes, Holmqvist shot a 70, giving her a three stroke lead heading into Tuesday's final round of 18.

Holmqvist sat at four-over most of the round. She birdied 15 before carding back-to-back bogeys on 16 and 17 to put her at +5. Holmqvist finished strong, getting a birdie on the par-5 18th hole to finish the round with a 76 (+4). Holmqvist was the only player to finish the tournament with a score under-par. Her total of 214 (-2) gave her a four-stroke advantage over Alina Ching of Pepperdine. Ching began the third round trailing by three strokes. She shot a 77 in the final round to finish four strokes back.

The victory is the first collegiate win for Holmqvist since coming to Cal. As a freshman at Tulane, Holmqvist was the individual medalist at the Conference USA Championships. She transferred to Cal as a sophomore and has been part of the Bears' lineup since the Spring of 2010.

Holmqvist is the third different Bear to earn medalist honors this season. Fellow senior Emily Childs was the medalist at the Peg Barnard Invitational at Stanford earlier this spring. Cal's third senior, Joanne Lee, edged Holmqvist to earn medalist honors at the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational in San Jose earlier this month.

Lee finished in the top-10, tying for sixth place with a six-over (222). It was the fourth top-10 finish for Lee this season. Lee matched her first-round three-over 75 in the final round, also getting a birdie on 18. She carded an even-par 72 in the second round.

Childs had an even-par 72 in the final round, the low score of the day for the Bears.

As a team, Cal couldn't catch Colorado, who moved into the lead in the second round after putting up a 289 (+1) Monday afternoon. The Bears, who had fallen to third place, used the birdies on the final hole from Holmqvist and Lee as well as a birdie from Childs on her second-to-last hole (hole 1) to jump back over Tennessee, finishing one stroke ahead of the Volunteers, finishing in second place with a three-round total of 891. Both Tennessee and Cal had 300's in the final round, tying for the lowest team scores for Tuesday's play.

After playing in tournaments on back-to-back weeks, the Bears get a short break in the schedule. They will return to action on April 16-17, playing in their final Bay Area tournament of the season, the Pacific Intercollegiate at Half Moon Bay.
