SAN JOSE, Calif. -
The California Golden Bear women's golf team is in first place after the first two rounds of the Juli Inkster Spartan Invite at Almaden Golf Course. Daniela Holmqvist leads the individuals after shooting a second-round 69.
The team, competing at the 6,169 yard, par-72 Almaden Golf and Country Club, played 36 holes on Monday, holding onto a five-stroke lead after the end of the second round. The Bears started strong, finishing the first 18 holes with a team score of one-under (287). The Bears went +8 in the second round (296), but still managed to maintain a five-stroke lead over second place UC Davis heading into Tuesday's final round.
Senior Daniela Holmqvist started the first round on the sixth hole. After doubling on seven, she carded four birdies and just one more bogey to finish at one-under. In the second round, Holmqvist again started on six, this time getting a birdie on seven, the first of four in the round to shoot a three-under 69.
Holmqvist has a one-stroke lead over teammate Joanne Lee. Lee had four birdies in the first round and three in the second, shooting a 71 and 70 to enter the final round sitting alone in second place at three-under par.
For the second tournament in a row, all eight members of the Cal golf team are competing at the tournament with Emily Childs, Nicola Roessler, and Jackie Williams' scores counting today the Cal team total and Morgan Thompson, Jo Ee Kok, and Joi Pentin competing as individuals.
The Bears, who are the defending champions at the event, will tee off at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday with another shotgun start. LIVE SCORING will be available through GolfStat.net.
