ERIE, Colo. -
Battling light rains and 40 degree temperatures, the No. 9 California Golden Bears dropped to eighth place after the completion of the second round of the NCAA West Regional in Erie, Colo.
The Bears teed off in the afternoon, playing the first half of the round in a light rain. The rains let up midway through the round, but the temperatures remained in the low 40's at Colorado National Golf Course near Boulder.
Despite the unpleasant conditions, the Bears only added five strokes to their first-round score, coming in at 301 in the second round. They dipped to eighth place, remaining a stroke ahead of Colorado and Illinois. Stanford, who teed off in the morning, continues to lead the field, 17 strokes ahead of the Bears. The Cardinal have a one stroke lead over second place LSU.
The other Bears in the field, the Baylor Bears are currently in fifth place with a two-day total of 593. Cal, Texas Tech, Pepperdine, Colorado, and Illinois are all within five strokes of Baylor in what looks to be a tough fight in the final round to finish in the top-eight and earn a place in the NCAA National Championships.
Senior Joanne Lee dropped six strokes off her first day score, coming in with a three-over 74 to lead the Bears. Senior Daniela Holmqvist continues to have the lowest overall score. She shot a 75 in the second round, putting her at +3 overall, currently ranking her 12th. Catherine O'Donnell of North Carolina leads the individuals, sitting at five-under over the first 36 holes.
