Big Second Round Vaults Cal Near Top at MacKenzie
FAIRFAX, Calif. – Cal (279-272 – 551, -17) used a 12-under par second round that was the best second round of the day and the second-best round overall to move within two strokes of Arizona State (271-278 – 549, -19) after the first 36 holes of the Alister MacKenzie Invitational were completed Monday at the 6,734-yard Meadow Club. Cal was in ninth place and eight shots behind Arizona State after the Sun Devils fired a 13-under par opening-round that was the best of the day.
“I didn't think we played that poorly this morning we just didn't putt well and we didn't play the par fives that well,” head coach Steve Desimone said. “I thought there was a chance we would turn it around this afternoon and that's what we did. We played the par fives well and made a few putts. They never really flinched in the afternoon. I'm proud of the guys and looking forward to what should be a fun day tomorrow.”
Sebastian Crampton (68-66 – 134, -8) is tied for second along with Arizona State's Max Rottluff (68-66 – 134, -8) with both one shot behind second-round leader Yannik Paul of Colorado (66-67 – 133, -9).
“It feels great to be in contention for my third straight event,” said Crampton, a true freshman who tied for fourth and tied for seventh in his first two Cal events. “There's still a lot of work left in order for our team and myself to come out on top tomorrow. We're going to play hard and try to minimize our mistakes to give ourselves the best chance coming down the stretch.”
KK Limbhasut (71-68 – 139, -3) and Walker Huddy (70-69 – 139, -3) are tied for 12th for the Bears, while Cameron Shaw (70-70 – 140, -2) is tied for 19th and Keelan Kilpatrick (72-69 – 141, -1) tied for 24th.
Cal has won at least a share of the tournament hosted annual by the Golden Bears each of the past five years with four of the wins outright. The Bears have won the event eight of the first 11 times it has been played since it began in 2002 with no event played in 2008 when Cal hosted the Pac-10 Championship.
Tuesday's third and final round has been changed to a shotgun start at 8:15 a.m. PT.
