California-Alcorn State Postgame Notes

  • With tonight's win, Cal is now 82-24 in season openers with victories in each of their last nine lidlifters.
  • Cal's 91 points were the most by the Bears in a season opener since a 91-83 win over TCU in the first round of the Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, Alaska, on Nov. 18, 1999.
  • Cuonzo Martin became the fourth consecutive Cal coach to win his debut game following Todd Bozeman (92-68 vs. Cal State Northridge in 1993), Ben Braun (75-59 vs. Iowa in 1996) and Mike Montgomery (68-56 vs. Pacific in 2008).
  • Cal opened the game by outscoring Alcorn State, 15-0, and did not allow a basket for the first 4:25 of the game. Jordan Mathews scored the Bears' first points of the year on a three-pointer.
  • Tyrone Wallace had his second straight big game in a season-opener, finishing with a career-high 22 points and 10 rebounds. Last year, he poured in 20 points vs. Coppin State. Wallace's previous scoring high was 21 vs. Stanford on Feb. 5, 2014. It also marked his sixth career 20-point effort and third career double-double.
  • Christian Behrens set a career high with 10 points. He tallied 6 against Washington last January. In addition, he matched his person best with four rebounds.
  • David Kravish blocked a career-high-tying 5 shots to move closer to the No. 1 position in school history. He now has 182 for second place and is chasing the total of 207 set by Michael Stewart from 1994-97.
  • Kravish also improved his rebound total to 695 with 8 boards vs. Alcorn State. He ranks 12th all-time at Cal, just behind No. 11 Roy Fisher (697, 1988-91).
  • Sam Singer dished out a career-best 6 assists. He had 5 vs. Arkansas at the Maui Invitational last year.
  • Jabari Bird also had a career-high in assists with 9. His previous best was 5 set twice last year.
  • Cal's 10 three-pointers marked the first time the Bears were in double digits from behind the arc since making 10 vs. Furman on Dec. 28, 2013.
