Head Coach Cuonzo Martin
On The Game
“From start to finish, we did a great job. For the most part we did a great job defending- for about a two to three-minute stretch, I thought our guys maintained a level of discipline on both sides.”
On the Opposing Team
“One of the things we talked about and watching these guys on film, I knew they were going to be physical. They play hard, they play tough, and they do a great job of playing together. I thought it was important that we play physical and call our space on both sides of the ball. Offensively, you have got to get your space or else those guys will take it away. They came out and played strong the entire night. I thought it was good for our guys to go against that zone- that 3-2 zone. Once our guys started to settle down and make plays we were fine.”
On Cal's Rebounding
“We're getting better. We're learning. I thought they did a great job tonight. They played strong and they played aggressive against these guys. They [CSUSM] did not really have the height, but they were physical. They played strong and we had to play stronger. I think we did good, our guards did really good tonight.”
CALIFORNIA PLAYERS
Tyrone Wallace, Junior Guard
On going up against a 3-2 zone
“I think we weren't in a very good rhythm at the beginning of the game, we were just standing around too much and no movement. Once we got used to it and we had been practicing against the zone, we got settled in and were able to find guys in rhythm and find shots.”
On the team's readiness for regular-season games
“I think we still need to get better rebounding. I think the movement on offense, we tend to hold the ball and guys are open so I think we need to get better with that. Overall, I think we are pretty good right now, everyone is playing hard, we're trying to do the right things, we're making mistakes but we're trying to do the right thing.”
Jabari Bird, Sophomore Guard
On his performance over the past two games
“Average. Not to the best of my ability. I'm trying to go out there and play hard, and be aggressive. At times, I was a little too aggressive, I didn't make the right plays, but it is all a part of growing up and learning and playing the game.”
On reasons why he was too aggressive
“Maybe a little excitement, I am really excited about this year and the team we have, and maybe at times I try to do too much. Going into the regular season, I will definitely tighten that up and we'll get it going.”
On readiness for regular season games
“I think we're ready. We're ready to start playing some basketball. We have had two good exhibition wins against two good teams and we're just ready to get the season started. We have a game next week that we are really looking forward to. We're ready to get it going.”
Cal State San Marcos Head Coach Jim Saia
On his team's performance
“Obviously we tried to slow the game down a little bit and keep it close and I thought we had a chance. We didn't execute really well and the guys didn't succumb to the game plan but we're a whole new team. I thought our kids really competed hard in the second half.”
On Cal
“Cal is a good, formidable Pac-12 team. Cuonzo [Martin] is doing a great job. They are playing hard, they are disciplined, organized and I think they have a real special coach.”
What this game means moving forward
“We're on Pac-12 Networks tonight, we're San Marcos, we're an NAIA school so it was exciting for us to play here. We're in the NAIA, ranked third in the country and have two big players out in Taran Brown and Tony Freeland and those are two All-American type players. They didn't play tonight but when we get them back I think we're going to be in good shape.
