No. 4 Cal MWP Tops LBSU, 8-6, in Kap7 Classic
STOCKTON, CALIF. – Spearheaded by the spectacular goalie play from senior Jon Sibley, No. 4 Cal men's water polo defeated No. 5 Long Beach State, 8-6, Saturday night at the Kap7 NorCal Classic in Stockton. With the win, the Golden Bears improved to 7-0 and will next play No. 1 ranked and Bay Area rival Stanford in the tournament semifinals at 10:40 a.m. Sunday at the Chris Kjeldsen Pool.
Sibley, who competed with the U.S. National Team this past summer, recorded nine saves against the 49ers including blocking two five-meter penalty shots. Offensively, Cal again showed balanced scoring with senior Luka Ivanovic tallying two goals and Farrel South, Thomas Carroll, Luca Cupido, Colin Mulcahy, Aleksa Saponjic and Conor Neumann each notching a goal.
“We came out very strong and set the tone,” said Cal coach Kirk Everist. “Gavin (head coach of Long Beach State and former Cal All-American and Olympian) has a very good team this year and we were able to contain them defensively, which was our goal.”
In Saturday's morning match, the Bears were led by three goals apiece from junior Colin Mulcahy and freshman Luca Cupido, to power past Santa Clara, 19-4.
