STOCKTON, CALIF. – Freshman standout Luca Cupido scored three goals and two assists, but the No. 4-ranked Cal men's water polo team (7-1) suffered its first loss of the season, falling 11-8 to top-ranked Stanford in the semifinals of the Kap 7 NorCal Classic in Stockton.

The Golden Bears had reached the tournament semifinals by defeating Santa Clara, 19-4, and No. 5-ranked Long Beach State, 8-6, Saturday. Cal will next face the loser of the other semifinal, UCLA-USC, for the tournament's third-place match at 4 p.m. at Chris Kjeldsen Pool.

Kirk Everist's squad had only trailed the Cardinal, 5-4, after the first period, but Stanford shut out the Bears, 2-0, in period two on a pair of goals by Bret Bonanni to take a 7-4 halftime advantage. The Cardinal were able to sustain the three-goal cushion as both teams scored single goals in the third period and three goals in the fourth quarter.

Besides Cupido's team-high three goals, junior Colin Mulcahy had goals in the first and third periods. Senior Aleksa Saponjic, sophomore Chandler Jarrels-Stickney and freshman Pedro Stellet also scored for Cal. Senior goalie Jon Sibley finished with five saves.
