SKOKIE, Ill. – Cal (285-279-270 – 834, -6) posted a record-breaking performance Monday in the final round of the Windon Memorial Classic for a 13-stroke win in the event hosted by Northwestern at the par-70, 6,793-yard Evanston Golf Club. The Golden Bears lineup featuring three freshmen and two sophomores broke a pair of Windon Memorial records during the victory with a 10-under par final round on Monday that broke their own mark set in 2010 and a 54-hole score that was nine strokes better than the previous record set by Illinois in 2008.

“We don't want to get too far ahead of ourselves but young teams need to be put in these situations and the sooner the better,” head coach Steve Desimone said. “These guys responded really well today, and that is a great sign going forward.”

Sophomore Cameron Shaw (72-69-65 – 206, -4) shot a career-low round of five-under par 65 on Monday to finish tied for second and one shot behind individual medalist Colton Staggs of Tulsa (69-73-63 – 205, -5), who equaled an 18-hole Windon Memorial record with his final round seven-under par 63.

Shaw was one of three Cal players with top four finishes along with freshmen Sebastian Crampton (75-68-66 – 209, -1) and KK Limbhasut (68-71-70 – 209, -1), who were both among a group of seven players tied for fourth. Crampton was making his Cal debut, while Limbhasut was playing for the second time as a Golden Bear after tying for 30th in his collegiate debut at the season-opening Gopher Invitational.

“It feels incredible to win the team title in my first collegiate event,” Crampton said. “Playing the way I did the final two rounds makes it even more special. I cannot wait to see what the rest of the season has in store for our team.”

“I am extremely happy that we won our first college tournament this year,” Limbhasut added.

Sophomore Walker Huddy (71-71-69 – 211, +1) finished just two shots behind Crampton and Limbhasut in a tie for 12th place, while freshman Ben Doyle (74-74-71 – 219, +9) moved up 19 spots over the final 18 holes to finish tied for 41st. Junior Keelan Kilpatrick (74-70-69 – 213, +3) played the event as an individual and tied for 17th.

Cal, who entered the event ranked No. 14 in the preseason GCAA poll and No. 24 in the latest rankings according to Golfweek, returns to action Sept. 29-30 at the Palouse Collegiate hosted by Washington State at Palouse Ridge Golf Club.
