BERKELEY – Denise Starr gutted out a three-set victory to cap day one of the season-opening Cal Nike Fall Invitational for the host Golden Bears on Friday at the newly renovated Hellman Tennis Complex. The California sophomore dropped the first set to BYU's Nicolette Tran, but Starr – ranked 25th in the ITA preseason singles poll – fought back to win the second set, 6-0, and came-from-behind to force a third-set tiebreaker. Starr – seeded second in the blue singles flight – ultimately dispatched Tran, 3-6, 6-0, 7-6(4), in the round of 16.

Seeded first in blue doubles and ranked 11th nationally, Starr and sophomore Maegan Manasse defeated Danielle Flores and Kareena Mangi of Saint Mary's, 8-4, in the blue doubles round of 16.

Friday marked the Cal women's first competition at the Hellman Tennis Complex since the addition of upgrades including elevated seating, public restrooms and locker rooms for the Cal men's and women's tennis teams.

The Channing Tennis Courts are also hosting matches during the three-day invitational, which includes three flights of singles and three flights of doubles.

Results from Friday are available here.

Matches will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday in the Cal Nike Fall Invitational.
