No. 4 Cal Tops Air Force, 19-10, in San Diego
SAN DIEGO, CALIF. – Behind four goals from freshman Luca Cupido – and three goals apiece from veterans Aleksa Saponjic, Luka Ivanovic and Colin Mulcahy – the Cal men's water polo team opened the 2014 season with a 19-10 victory over Air Force in the opening match of the Triton Invitational in San Diego.
Cupido, the younger brother of former Golden Bear Giacomo Cupido (2010-13), just recently competed with the USA National Team at FINA Cup, scoring goals in the quarterfinals, semifinals and third place match. Saponjic is a 2012 Olympic bronze medalist for Serbia, a three-time All-American and was Cal's leading scorer last season with 44 goals. Ivanovic is a senior center with 31 career goals and Mulcahy is a two-time All-American who led the Bears with 29 ejections earned and 13 field blocks in 2013.
Senior goalie Jon Sibley, won competed with the U.S. National Team this past summer, collected eight saves in three quarters against Air Force, while freshman Kevin Le Vine had two saves in the fourth period.
Senior Blake Kelly (two goals), senior Matt Russell, sophomore Thomas Carroll, and freshman Pedro Stellet (two goals) also tallied goals for the Bears.
Kirk Everist's squad will next take on host UC San Diego at 2:40 p.m. Saturday. Cal then plays No. 7 UC Santa Barbara at 9:20 a.m. and La Verne at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Triton Invitational.
