Bears Continue Early Progress At Pacific
STOCKTON, Calif. -- Sophomores Kyle Coan and Connor Hoppe picked up event wins and the Cal men's swimming team got more valuable early season racing under its belt on the first day of the Pacific Invitational at Chris Kjeldsen Pool in Stockton.
After impressive performances in the first two dual meets of the season, Cal took a partial squad to Pacific with the intention of getting more race action for several members of the team. Participating only in the first day of a two-day event (distance events take place Saturday), the Bears showed their speed in multiple races, bringing home two victories and coming close in a few others.
Hoppe was the first Bear to pick up a victory, winning the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 54.92 that was over six-tenths of a second faster than second-place finisher Maksim Shcherbakov of Fresno Pacific. Two races later, Coan led a one-two Cal finish in the 200 freestyle, out-touching teammate Dillon Williams with a time of 1:40.52.
Freshman Ken Takahashi nearly gave the Bears a third win with a strong effort in the 200 individual medley. The native of Irvine, Calif. stopped the clock in 1:52.22, narrowly finishing behind BYU's Jake Taylor's time of 1:52.13. Cal also finished second in the 400 freestyle relay as the team of Coan, Jonathan Fiepke, David Puczkowski and Williams swam to a time of 3:04.76 and finished just behind a team from Pacific.
Cal returns to training for the rest of October and gets back to race action on Nov. 4 at 2 p.m. when Stanford visits Spieker Aquatics Complex for a triple distance meet. The fall home calendar concludes on Nov. 6 when North Carolina State comes to Berkeley for a 3 p.m. dual meet.
