Cross Country Repeats In Seventh at Pac-12's
COLFAX, Wash. – The California men's and women's cross country teams repeated with identical seventh-place finishes at the 2014 Pac-12 Cross Country Championships that were held at the Colfax Golf Club in Colfax, Wash.
A broadcast of the meet will air on the Pac-12 Networks on Monday, Nov. 2, at 6 p.m. PT.
“We had a mix of good things and things we need to get better,” California Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Tony Sandoval said. “The same people are running well each week, but we need to figure out how to make sure we are firing on all cylinders. It's been a tough week with a lot of exams right now, so hopefully in a couple of weeks we'll be ready to do what we're capable of running. “
The 21st ranked Golden Bear men were paced by senior Chris Walden who crossed the line 10th overall at a season-best time of 23:26.8 in the 8K race. Like every other race this season, sophomore John Lawson stayed with Walden throughout the race and took 21st overall at 23:48 to lead the one-two Golden Bear punch.
Leland Later (24:18, 37th), Robert Brandt (24:29, 45th) and Garrett Corcoran (24:39, 48th) also finished in the point-scoring places for the Cal men. Trent Brendel finished 54th, Ned Trim was 59th, Cameron Tu was 63rd and Ellis Newton was 74th to round out the Golden Bear runners at the meet.
The women's team was led by a collegiate-best performance from freshman Marissa Williams who took 13th overall at her first Pac-12 Cross Country Championships at a time of 20:24.0, besting her performance at the NCAA Pre-Nationals by three seconds.
Megan Bordes crossed in 42nd at a season-best time of 21:00.6 and was followed by Kelsey Santisteban in 52nd (21:13.6). Mariel Mendoza came in two seconds later to take 55th, and Georgia Bell rounded out the scoring positions with her time of 21:30.5 to finish 62nd in her second meet of the season. Natalie Herberg finished 84th and Jordyn Colter was 105th for the Bears.
“Chris Walden ran significantly better than he did at Pre-Nationals,” Sandoval noted of his senior finisher. “We didn't run Thomas Joyce today, and hopefully we'll have him back for regionals. On the women's side, Kelsey improved a bit from where she was at Pre-Nationals, and Megan Bordes did as well. Unfortunately we had a few people sick, and in this environment it doesn't take much (to have an effect).”
Colorado won the men's title with 46 points and was followed by Stanford and Oregon in the top three. Oregon's Edward Cheserek took home the Pac-12 individual title at a time of 23:06.3.
The Buffaloes also won the women's title with 45 points and was followed by Oregon and Stanford. Cardinal senior Aisling Cuffe won individual medalist honors at a time of 19:53.1.
The Golden Bears continue competition next week when a team travels to Davis to compete at the Doc Adams Invitational on Saturday, Nov. 7.
