Bears Cap Strong Weekend, Beat SJSU
BERKELEY - J.D. Ratchford found the net five times and the No. 4-ranked Cal men's water polo team put a cap on a strong weekend at Spieker Aquatics Complex with a 13-5 victory over San Jose State.
With the win, Cal improves to 19-4 overall and 5-1 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play. San Jose State falls to 3-20 and 0-7 in conference play.
The Bears took a while to warm up Sunday, playing the Spartans to a 2-2 draw after a period. Early goals from Ratchford and Johnny Hooper got Cal on the board but several shots hit the woodwork and two goals from SJSU's Alek Dendall kept San Jose State in the match.
Cal began to pull away in the second period, finding the net five times thanks in part to a three-goal flurry to end the quarter. Ratchford got things started by converting a penalty shot earned by Pedro Stellet, and after San Jose State scored, Hooper added another when Connor Reid scooped up a block and found his teammate alone for the goal. The Spartans added another goal on a penalty shot but Odysseas Masmanidis, Reid and Hooper scored before the break to make it 7-4 at intermission.
From there, Cal continued to add to its lead. Ratchford scored off an assist by Vassilis Tzavaras, Farrel South found the net with a well-placed lob shot and Masmanidis converted off an assist by Nicholas Carniglia to make it 10-4. Ratchford added two more goals at the beginning of the fourth and Reid finished the scoring with a power play goal to give Cal its second victory in as many days.
The Bears got contributions from up and down the roster, with several regulars sitting out or merely making a cameo. Peter O'Laughlin drew the start in goal and made eight saves. Cole Williams stopped 10 shots for San Jose State.
"With guys in different roles, that can be a shocker to the system when all of a sudden they have to step up and be the guy," Cal head coach Kirk Everist said. "They all remember how to do it but it took them a couple quarters to go 'oh, these guys aren't in, I might be the No. 1 option in this group.' I think it's a good learning experience for them. Off of a big emotional day like yesterday, starting off a little sluggish probably is not surprising."
Cal stays at Spieker next weekend for its final two home matches of the 2015 regular season as Pacific and Pepperdine visit for a pair of noon matches. Saturday's match against Pacific will also serve as Senior Day, with a pre-game ceremony honoring those upperclassmen taking prior to the start of the match. The regular season concludes Nov. 15 with a 1 p.m. match at Stanford.
