BERKELEY – Three student-athletes that have earned Triple-A ratings by the California Beach Volleyball Association have signed National Letters of Intent to play beach volleyball at Cal, head coach Meagan Schmitt announced Wednesday.

Nicole Anderson and Iya Lindahl of San Diego and Madison Dueck of Santa Cruz all submitted their intentions to attend Cal, beginning in the fall of 2016. They will begin play for the Bears in the 2017 season.

“I'm thrilled to get this class on campus,” Schmitt said. “They are the next integral step in building this program. We have these three student-athletes, and will be adding more in the spring. I expect them to come in and make an immediate impact on the squad.”

Dueck has spent two years in the USAV High Performance Beach Volleyball Program. She also helped Aptos High School win the Santa Cruz Coast League in indoor volleyball three times.

“Madison has the ability to play both blocker and defender, but I see her as becoming one of our stronger ball control players from that class,” Schmitt said. “She is extremely smart and can put the ball wherever she wants.”

Lindahl took third place at the 2015 U-18 AAU Junior Nationals and third at the BVCA U-18 Championships.

“Iya gets it done,” Schmitt said. “She's not the biggest player out on the sand, but she consistently beats players that are more physical than her because she is such a well-rounded player. She can do it all.”

Anderson took second place at the CIF Championships as a junior at Torrey Pines High School and won the bronze medal at the AAU Championships. She was third at CIF as a freshman.

“I expect Nicole to be extremely physical from the get-go,” Schmitt said. “From Day One, she should be able to step in for a few of our graduating blockers that won't be with us the next year.”

The Bears open the 2016 season on March 4 against Loyola Marymount at the Arizona Invitational.
