The Bears (15-0) began their quest for a fourth straight PAC 7s title against Stanford in the first match of pool play on Saturday, and beat the Cardinal, 45-0, on seven tries including a pair from Hugo D'Auriol. Next up was Colorado, whom the Blue and Gold defeated, 55-0, on nine tries including two apiece from Andrew Battaglia and Matthew Coyle.
Observers who viewed Utah as Cal's toughest opponent of the day witnessed the Utes score the one and only try given by the Bears all day in the fifth minute on a score by Utah's Phil Hinson. But seven tries by Cal, including two each from Evan Coleman and Patrick Barrientes, gave the Bears a 41-5 victory.
A nine-try, 61-0 win over Oregon State ended the Bears' first day at the PAC 7s with two tries each scored by Jesse Milne, Connor Sweet and William Fuller.
Sunday, the Rugby Bears will attempt to finish their fall 2015 slate without a defeat, which can be accomplished with a win over ASU followed by a victory in the cup final against either UCLA or Utah.
