Cal Tied For Seventh After First Day At Southern Highlands
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Cal is tied for seventh place after the first round Monday of the Southern Highlands Collegiate Invitational being hosted by UNLV at the Southern Highlands Golf Course. The prestigious 15-team event features a field made up entirely of programs ranked among the nation's top 50 including 11 in the top 25. The Golden Bears shot an even-par round of 288 and are 12 strokes behind leader Texas (276, -12).
Alexander Wilson led the Bears effort and is tied for 16th after a one-under par round of 71. Cameron Shaw and KK Limbhasut are tied for 27th one stroke behind Wilson after both carded an opening-round even-par 72. Shotaro Ban (73, +1) is another shot back and tied for 38th, while Sebastian Crampton (75, +3) is tied for 60th.
“In all honesty this was about what I expected today,” head coach Steve Desimone said. “This is a challenging golf course and a tremendous field. I think we were a little nervous and starting on the toughest part of the golf course so we got off to a bit of a slow start. But has been the trend with this team we settled and played a good second half of the round. We fought our way into respectability and even back into the tournament. Let's see what happens tomorrow and see if we can get a little closer to the top.”
The 54-hole event continues with 18 holes of play both Tuesday and Wednesday with the first tee times scheduled to begin each day at 9 a.m. PST.
Redford Bobbit (UNLV) and Charlie Saxon (Oklahoma) share the lead after one round following seven-under par scores of 65 on Monday. Bobbitt is playing in the event as an individual.
