Owens, Williams Earn All-Pac-12 Accolades
SAN FRANCISCO – California's underclassmen continue to shine for the Golden Bears, as freshman Toni-Ann Williams and sophomore Charlie Owens earned spots on this year's All-Pac-12 gymnastics teams, the conference announced Tuesday. Williams is an All-Pac-12 All-Around First Team member, and Owens was named to the second team.
The first team consists of the Pac-12's top six all-around competitors, plus the top three competitors in each individual event who are not among the all-around honorees. Scores are determined by regional qualifying score (entire season composite) after the Pac-12 Championships. After the top six all-arounders and the top three student-athletes from each event were named to the first team, a 10-member All-Conference second-team was selected. The same formula used for selecting the first team was used to select the second team.
Williams won the all-around in the first session of last Saturday's Pac-12 Championships with a score of 39.325, placing sixth overall. She is the leading freshman all-around gymnast in the NCAA this year, holding the highest all-around ranking for a newcomer at 10th, and the highest individual all-around score in the country by a freshman with a 39.700. She was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year after collecting a conference-record six Freshman of the Week honors this season.
Owens logged a 39.025 at the Pac-12 Championships to earn her second team selection. The sophomore has been a rock in the all-around for the Bears this season, competing in all four events in every single one of Cal's meets. She is second on the team in titles won with four event titles this season, and set career-highs on vault (9.85), bars (9.95), floor (9.90) and all-around (39.325) this year. This is her second consecutive All-Pac-12 Second Team selection.
Owens, Williams and their Golden Bear squad are set to host five teams in Haas Pavilion on April 4 for the NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championships Berkeley Regional. Cal meets Utah, Georgia, Boise State, Utah State and BYU at 6 p.m. Tickets are available for purchase on CalBears.com or by calling 800-462-3277. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for youth (17 and under), seniors (65 and older) and students from participating institutions.
