REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. – In a top-four showdown, fourth-ranked California women's crew defeated second-ranked Virginia in the varsity eight to highlight the second day of the Pac-12 Women's Challenge Sunday morning at Redwood Shores, Calif. The Cavaliers captured victories in the second varsity and both the varsity four and second varsity four to round out the morning's regatta.

The Bears' varsity eight, after earning victories against Oklahoma and Washington State on Saturday, recorded their best time of the weekend with a 6:16.7 to win by a length of open water over Virginia (6:23.7).  

Following the varsity eight race, the Cavaliers pulled out three narrow victories in the second varsity eight and both the varsity four and second varsity four. In one of the closest races of the morning, UVA's second varsity eight won by several seats over Cal. The Cavaliers completed the course in 6:26.2, four seconds ahead of the Bears (6:30.2).

UVA edged out Cal in both fours, with the Cavaliers' varsity four (7:13.9) finishing a length ahead of Cal (7:18.8). Virginia's second varsity four edged Cal by just a couple seats to claim the victory in the final race of the day, finishing just over two seconds ahead of the Bears (7:18.1 – 7:20.9).

Cal will return to action in two weeks, as the Bears will compete in the Lake Natoma Invitational April 11-12 just outside Sacramento, Calif.
