Pac-12 Honors Missy Franklin and Teri McKeever

BERKELEY – Following a season in which the Golden Bears captured both the NCAA and Pac-12 championships, Cal sophomore Missy Franklin was named the Pac-12 Swimmer of the Year and Teri McKeever was selected the Pac-12 Coach of the Year.

Franklin won the 200-yard individual medley, 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke and swam a leg on the victorious 200 free relay and 800 free relay at the national meet. Her 200 free time of 1:39.10 lowered the American record by more than a second. Franklin was recognized as the NCAA Swimmer of the Year for her efforts.

At the Pac-12 Championships, Franklin won the 200 IM, 200 free and 200 back crowns and anchored the 800 free relay to an American record time as Cal won its second consecutive and fourth overall Pac-12 crown.

“It's an honor to be named the Pac-12 Swimmer of the Year,” Franklin said. “I couldn't have asked for a better way to end the season from both an individual and team standpoint. Cal's win at NCAA Championships was truly a team effort and we didn't just come together as a team, but we came together as a family. I am so grateful to have such wonderful teammates and an amazing coach staff.”

Franklin's honor marks the 11th time that a Golden Bear has been named the conference swimmer of the year. Junior Elizabeth Pelton was the last Cal swimmer chosen in 2013.

McKeever is the Pac-12 Coach of the Year for the seventh time in her career. Under her directions, the Bears won their fourth NCAA Championship in March, setting a school record with 513 points. All of Cal's four titles have come within the past seven years. Nine different Golden Bear swimmers captured at least one race at the meet, either individually or on a relay. McKeever was also named the National Coach of the Year. At Pac-12 Championships, the Bears picked up 1,629.50 points as Cal swimmers won 12 swimming events, breaking the previous school record of nine set in 2012.

“It's an honor because it's voted on by your peers, who recognize the challenges and the opportunities you face throughout the year,” McKeever said. “For them to acknowledge a job well done is very meaningful. I look at that as an award for (associate head coach) Kristen (Cunnane) and (athletic trainer) Ann Caslin and our whole staff. You can't win coach of the year without an awesome staff and student-athletes performing at their best. It's definitely a team award.”
