GOLD RIVER, Calif. – Third-ranked California women's crew captured every race except for one Saturday during the first day of racing at the Lake Natoma Invitational on Gold River near Sacramento, Calif.
The Golden Bears varsity eight posted the best time of the day, completing the course in 6:18.4, en route to an open-water victory over No. 16 Notre Dame (6:33.7) and Rhode Island (6:49.1).
Cal's second varsity eight captured the open-water win with a time of 6:31.0, over Notre Dame (6:44.1) and Rhode Island (6:52.8).
The Bears' varsity four completed its race in 7:16.40, to defeat Notre Dame (7:21.5) and Rhode Island (7:43.5). Cal fielded a second varsity four, which captured a length win over Notre Dame (7:29.40– 7:33.9). San Diego placed third with a time of 7:44.6.
In the afternoon session, the Bears' varsity eight posted a time of 6:30.2, to defeat Gonzaga (6:45.1) and Loyola Marymount (6:57.7) by open water.
Cal's second varsity also earned the open-water victory, defeating Gonzaga (6:42.0 – 7:06.2). Loyola Marymount finished third with a time of 7:18.3.
The Bears' varsity four finished with a time of 7:36.3 for the open-water win over Gonzaga (7:54.5) and Loyola Marymount (8:10.1).
Cal's only defeat on the day came in the second varsity four A Finals, where Cal, Brown and Stanford competed in a tightly-contested race throughout. Brown came away with the four-second win over Cal (7:34.1 – 7:38.4), while the Bears edged the Cardinal by a tenth-of-a-second for second place.
Racing in the Lake Natoma Invitational concludes on Sunday, featuring a showdown of three of the top six crews in the nation when No. 2 Brown, No. 3 Cal and No. 6 Stanford clash on Gold River. The varsity four race will begin at 8:40 a.m., while the second varsity eight will begin at 9:10 a.m. and the varsity eight will close the competition at 9:50 a.m.
