Bears Succeed at Sacramento and San Francisco
SACRAMENTO/SAN FRANCISCO - The California Golden Bears track and field team sent a contingent of 23 athletes Saturday to the Sacramento Open and six athletes to San Francisco for the USF West Coast Last Chance Meet in an opportunity to improve their marks and seedings for the NCAA regional qualifiers.
At the Sacramento Open, Cal had three men champions and three women champions. Junior Ben Greenwald captured the 400 meters in a career-best time of 48.56. In the high jump, junior Noel Frazier won with a leap of 6-9.75, while junior Jonte Grant placed first in the long jump with a mark of 24-03.00.
On the women's side, the Bears excelled in the jumps. Sophomore Christine Canning was the champion in the high jump with a leap of 5-7 (1.70m), sophomore Kiare Tanner won the long jump with a mark of 18-4.25 (5.59m), and freshman Ashley Anderson placed first in the triple jump with a leap of 39-10 (12.14m).
Meanwhile at the USF West Coast Last Chance Meet at San Francisco State's Cox Stadium, Cal's best performance was from sophomore Nijae Jones, who was third in the 800 meters with a time of 2:10.14. Other top finishers for the Bear women in the 800 meters were sophomre Katherine Haysbert placing fifth (2:13.54) and freshman Natalie Herberg finishing sixth (2:13.61). Freshman Nuria Tio Peig, who had placed 12 th in the 800 meters (2:18.52), was eighth in the 1,500 with a time of 4:40.09).
Following this week, Cal will be heading to Westwood to the campus of UCLA for the Pac-12 Championships on May 16-17.
