Joyce Headlines 12 Golden Bears on Pac-12 All-Academic List
SAN FRANCISCO - Junior Thomas Joyce and 11 other California Bears were named to the 2015 Pac-12 Conference Men's and Women's Track and Field All-Academic teams, announced today by Commissioner Larry Scott. To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and be either a starter or significant contributor.
Joyce was a first team selection on the men's side, recording a 3.54 grade-point average as an economics major, while also excelling on the track. Joyce set a new school record in the 1500-meters, ran a sub-four-minute mile and qualified for the NCAA Championships, all while succeeding in the classroom.
Seven of Joyce's teammates were also named honorable mentions on Friday by the conference; sophomore thrower Matt Esparza, senior thrower Scott Esparza, sophomore mid-distance runner Eugene Hamilton III, senior distance runner Collin Jarvis, junior distance runner Leland Later, sophomore distance runner Josh Lewis and senior javelin thrower Andrew Scholnick.
On the women's side, four Bears were named as honorable mention selections as well; senior jumper Tara Lookabaugh, senior distance runner Sam Ralstin, junior pole vaulter Victoria Rische and junior distance-runner Mariel Mendoza.
