Bears Continue Exhibition Trip Through Australia

MELBOURNE, Australia - The California Golden Bears men's basketball team will take on the Frankston Blues of the South East Australian Basketball League (SEABL) at Frankston Basketball Stadium just outside of Melbourne on Monday night (2 a.m. PT Tuesday morning). The game will be the Bears' second of a 12-day, four-game exhibition tour in Australia.

The Bears got off to a good start in their first game Sunday with a 100-63 win over Victoria Select. Shooting a strong 55% from the field, the team saw several members score in the double-digit range. Freshman Jaylen Brown led the way with 17 points. Junior Jordan Mathews added 15 points, and sophomore Kameron Rooks and junior Jabari Bird contributed 14 points and 13 points, respectively. Freshman Ivan Rabb had a double double (11 points, 10 rebounds) in his first action as a Bear and the team also saw strong play from the point guard position, with senior Tyrone Wallace adding 10 points and six assists and sophomore Brandon Chauca leading the Bears with seven assists.

Defensively, the Bears limited Victoria Select to 33% shooting and outrebounded the all-star team 46-25. Cal also forced Victoria Select to turn the ball over numerous times and scored 15 points off of turnovers.

“We've spent a lot of our time in practice on our defensive mindset and toughness, our mental toughness as a team, spacing on offense and playing together," Cal coach Cuonzo Martin said. "I thought our guys did a great job playing hard and playing together. They did a solid job moving the basketball. We still have to tighten our defense up but they did a good job of making plays and attacking the rim.

“This has been a great trip and a great experience for us so far,” Martin continued. “The guys are coming together well and I'm excited about the opportunity to watch them play against quality opponents here and give us a gauge of where we are right now.”
