U.S. Amateur Ends For Collin Morikawa And Shotaro Ban
OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. – The second round of the U.S. Amateur was suspended late Tuesday but for incoming Cal freshman Collin Morikawa and senior Shotaro Ban their runs in their debuts at the event have ended. Morikawa (70-75 – 145, +5) was in 97th place when second-round play was suspended due to darkness Tuesday but 71 golfers have already completed two rounds ahead of him with only the top 64 player after 36 holes reaching match play. Ban (75-72 – 147, +7) also finished his round Tuesday and was tied for 158th.
Morikawa started his second round on the 10th tee in a tie for 30th place at even par and was still even for the tournament after 11 holes Tuesday. Morikawa started his round with a birdie on the par-four 10th to get into the red and had another on the par-five 18th to get him back to even after bogeys on the par-four 13th and 16th. But Morikawa played his final seven holes in five-over par starting with a double bogey on the par-three third and ending with a triple bogey on the par-four ninth. He did manage a pair of birdies over his final seven holes on the par-fourth and sixth but also had bogeys on the par-three third and fifth.
Ban had five birdies during his round including three of the final four holes on the par-four 15th and 16th, as well as the 18th while his others came on the par-five seventh and par-four 11th. But Ban also had a double bogey on the 10th hole as well as five bogeys that came on the par-four second, fifth and eighth holes on the front nine, and the par-four 13th and 17th on his back.
The tournament that began in 1895 and is the oldest golf championship in America at one day older than the U.S. Open will complete the second round of stroke play Wednesday with the 54 players still remaining on the course when play was suspended Tuesday finishing their second round.
The top 64 players after 36 holes of stroke play is completed will move on to match play with six rounds scheduled to be contested Wednesday-Sunday on the North Course. FOX Sports 1 and FOX will provide at least 15 hours of television coverage over the five scheduled days of match play.
