Century Mark: Former Cal Coach Turns 100
BERKELEY – Believed to be the oldest living coach in the Cal family, former assistant football and basketball coach Zeb Chaney turned 100 years old last month at his home in El Dorado, Arkansas.
Chaney, who is originally from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, made his way to Berkeley in the early 1940s – originally as a physical fitness instructor. Chaney first became an assistant basketball coach to legendary head coach Nibs Price in 1943. Then when Pappy Waldorf took over the football program, Chaney became one of his assistants.
Chaney coached on Cal's football staff from 1946-55, helping the Bears reach three consecutive Rose Bowls. He also was on the coaching staff of the men's basketball team that went to the NCAA Final Four in 1946.
CalBears.com caught up with Mr. Chaney shortly after his birthday on July 15. Watch the accompanying video to find out what he had to say.
