SAN FRANCISCO ? California's Karla Popovic defeated Shanna Dos Santos from host University of San Francisco, 6-2, 6-1, in Thursday's singles opening round of the Battle in the Bay Classic held at the California Tennis Club.

Ranked 64th in the nation and seeded third in the tournament, the Golden Bear sophomore advanced to play Pepperdine's Laura Gulbe in the quarterfinal round on Friday at 10:30 a.m.

Cal sophomore Lyann Hoang likewise advanced to the quarterfinals, as her round of 16 opponent, USC's Alex Letzt, withdrew from their Thursday match due to illness.

Hoang and Popovic will also team up in doubles at the California Tennis Club, opening the tournament against USF's Hanna Borjeson and Genevieve McCloskey in the quarterfinals on Friday at 9 a.m.

Also on Friday, senior Klara Fabikova and juniors Maegan Manasse and Denise Starr open action at the Oracle/ITA Masters in Malibu.
