SAN JOSE – The No. 4 Cal women's water polo team improved to 4-0 on the season with two more wins Sunday on the final day of the LouStrong Memorial at San Jose State.

The Bears got three goals each from senior Sierra Smiley and junior Stephanie Mutafyan to defeat Sonoma State 12-4 the sophomore Carla Carrega led the charge with a hat trick of her own in a 7-3 triumph over Bakersfield.

Cal had eight different goal-scorers against the Seawolves. The Bears jumped out to a 4-0 lead, and after Sonoma State finally got on the scoreboard, Cal notched five more unanswered goals to take command.

The Bears received a stern test from MPSF counterpart Bakersfield, who scored the game's first two goals before Cal came back to tie it on a penalty shot from Carrega and a goal by freshman Sofia Rivas. The Bears then scored the only goals of the second quarter, getting conversions from Carrega and junior Emily Loughlin to lead 4-2 at halftime.

Carrega scored on another penalty shot as the teams exchanged goals in the third quarter, but Cal pulled away in the fourth period on another goal by Loughlin and a score from junior Genevieve Weed.

Junior goalie Madeline Trabucco made four saves in each game for the Bears.

Cal returns to action next weekend at the Santa Barbara Invitational.
