SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The No. 4 Cal women's water polo team was on both ends of a pair of one-goal games Friday on the first day of the Santa Barbara Invitational, as the Bears defeated No. 13 UC Santa Barbara 9-8 in overtime and fell to No. 7 Hawaii 10-9.

Sophomore Carla Carrega led the offense with five goals, including a hat trick in the win over the Gauchos. Her goal with seven seconds remaining tied the game and forced overtime.

Senior Pippa Saunders scored her second goal of the game in the second extra period to lift Cal (5-1) to the win.

The Bears trailed 8-7 heading into the fourth period against the Rainbow Wahine but went in front on goals by sophomore Kindred Paul and Carrega. But Hawaii tied it up early in the fourth quarter and scored the game-winner with 1:14 remaining.

Junior Emily Loughlin scored twice in each game for the Bears.

Cal resumes play in the Santa Barbara Invitational on Saturday with games against No. 17 Long Beach State and Bakersfield.
