TUSCON, AZ – Cal is in third place following the opening day of action Friday at the Arizona Intercollegiate being hosted by Arizona at the par-71, 7262-yard Sewailo Golf Club. All 16 teams in the field had players on the back nine of the second round when the action was suspended due to darkness. Washington (-9) will be in the lead when play continues at 7:30 am MT/6:30 am PT on Saturday morning followed by Texas (-7) and Cal (+3).
Cal moved up two spots and shaved three strokes off the number the Bears trailed the Huskies by shooting five-under par during the second round prior to the suspension of play. The Bears shot an opening round eight-over par 292 and were tied for fourth place 15 strokes off the pace set by Washington after the first 18 holes.
“We definitely got off to a very slow start but we stabilized after the first five or six holes and then held pretty steady the rest of the day,” head coach Steve Desimone said. “We're behind a couple of pretty good teams, but we're still within striking distance. I'm disappointed because should be a lot closer. Twelve shots is a lot to make up on good teams but not impossible.”
Shotaro Ban and Collin Morikawa are tied for fourth on the individual leaderboard after the first day of action at two-under par and six strokes behind co-leaders Frank Garber of Washington and Beau Hossler of Texas at eight-under par.
Ban has birdied seven of his first 14 holes in the second round including each of his first three to recover from an opening-round four-over par 75. He started his rounds on the sixth hole and in addition to the par-four sixth, par-three seventh and par-five eighth holes, he also has birdies on the par-five 10th, par-five 14th, par-four 15th and par-four first. His lone bogey came on the par-three 13th. Ban had six birdies and two pars in his first round with bogeys on the par-three third, par-four fourth, sixth, par-four 12th, par-three 13th and 15th holes. He birdied the par-four second and par-five eighth holes the first time around.
Morikawa opened his rounds on the fifth hole and played the eighth hole in three-under par for the day with an eagle in the second round and a birdie in the first. He would bogey the par-four ninth and 11th holes before staying one above par for the round until the a wild four-hole stretch with three birdies (18, 1, 3) and one double bogey (2) left him at even over the first 18 holes. He got to four-under par at one point in the second round by following his eagle on eight with birdies on nine and 11 after making bogey on the holes in his first round. But he gave three of the strokes back with his second double bogey of the day on the par-four 17th and a bogey on the par-four 18th before getting one back with a birdie on the par-four first before his round was suspended with three holes to play.
“It was great to get back into the rhythm of things and start off the spring,” Morikawa said. “My day was pretty steady even though I had two doubles in the round. Overall, my game today wasn't great, but I was able to take advantage of when I put myself in the right spots. As a team, I thought we started off slow and took some time getting into playing our own games. With the many mistakes we all gave away, we're all ready for tomorrow and to try and put ourselves back into contention.”
Walker Huddy is tied for 12th at one-over par through 15 holes of his second round. He started his rounds on the ninth hole had an opening-round one-over par score followed by playing even over his next 15 holes. Huddy had two birdies (16, 8) and three bogeys (9, 17, 4) in his opening round followed by a wild first 15 holes of his second round that started with a birdie (9) before a six-hole stretch that he played in five-over with bogeys on 12 and 13, followed by a double bogey on 14 and then another bogey on 17. But he would play his final six holes in four-under with an eagle on 18, and birdies on one, two and five, while bogeying three.
KK Limbhasut (+7 thru 15 holes of second round) and Jamie Cheatham (+13 thru 13 holes of second round) were also in action for the Bears and are tied for 35th and tied for 63rd.
Limbhasut's three-over par opening-round 74 that began on the eighth hole included included six birdies (12, 13, 17, 18, 1, 5), two bogeys (4, 8), two double bogeys (2, 9) and one triple bogey (11), two double bogeys (2, 9) and two bogeys (4, 8). He is four-over par through the first 15 holes of his second round with three birdies (8, 10, 16), four bogeys (12, 13, 2, 4) and another triple bogey on 11.
Cheatham's 10-over par opening-round 81 that started on the seventh hole had a single birdie on four, with three bogeys (11, 16, 2), two double bogeys (17, 18) and one quadruple bogey (9).
