FAIRFAX, Calif. – Collin Morikawa (64-69-66 – 199, -14) capped off his lowest 54-hole collegiate total with a five-under par 66 in the final round of the Alister MacKenzie Invitational at Meadow Club on Tuesday as he finished third in the event for his fourth straight top-10 finish dating back to last season. Morikawa started Tuesday's action tied for sixth and three shots off the lead but finished just a single stroke behind co-individual medalists Ki Taek Lee of Arizona State (66-64-68 – 198, -15) and Conner Kumpula of Oregon State (68-64-66 – 198, -15).

"This was another great week for me to finish third, but I'm still a little disappointed I couldn't come out on top," Morikawa said about the second-best showing of his collegiate career.

Lee also led Arizona State (275-273-273 – 821, -31) to the team title by six strokes over Kumpula's second-place Oregon State (270-278-279 – 827, -25). Cal (277-276-282 – 835, -17) tied for eighth.

"There were tough conditions today with the pin locations and wind but the team fought hard and competed," said Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men's Golf Walter Chun.

Morikawa had a bogey-free round Tuesday, starting with a birdie on the par-four 10th before adding four more on the par-four 12th and 16th, par-five first and par-four third before finishing with six straight pars.
"I gave myself some chances coming down the stretch and could just not come through." Morikawa said.

Tanner Hughes (68-70-70 – 208, -5) was the next Cal player on the final leaderboard in a tie for 18th after breaking par for the third consecutive round in the tournament Tuesday with a one-under tour of the course that included five birdies and four bogeys.

"I had a lot of fun out there," Hughes said. "Meadow Club is always fun to play because of its classic MacKenzie design along with its prestige as a golf club. It felt good to get a top-20 finish in a good field like this one."
Playing as an individual Alexander Wilson (72-69-67 – 208, -5) had the best round of the day by a Cal player as well as his collegiate career low with a four-under 67 to move up 19 spots also into a tie for 18th. Wilson had six birdies and three bogeys with three of his birdies coming consecutively on the par-three 14th, par-five 15th and par-four 16th holes.

Ben Doyle (72-69-72 – 213, E), Stephen Griggs (71-68-74 – 213, E) and Clayton Madey (72-70-71 – 213, E) all tied for 40th with Griggs and Madey playing as individuals. William Aldred (75-68-74 – 217, +4) and Walker Huddy (73-70-76 – 219, +6) tied for 56th and 67th, respectively, while Alex Helgans (76-72-73 – 221, +8) played as an individual and tied for 71st. Helgans, a student at Cal since the fall of 2012 and a former Cal student assistant coach, was playing in his first ever collegiate tournament.

Cal will next play Oct. 16-18 at the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational hosted by UCF at the Isleworth Golf & Country Club while Morikawa will make his PGA TOUR debut as an amateur locally this Thursday at the Safeway Open at the Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa.

"There are plenty of positives from this tournament to take away heading into my first PGA TOUR event," Morikawa said. "Opportunities like this don't come around too often, so I'm thankful and looking forward to playing against some of the best players in the world."

"It's an opportunity of a lifetime for Collin," Chun added. "He's be able to compete and compare his game to the best in the world. Regardless of how he plays this will benefit the development of his game moving forward."
