BERKELEY, Calif. – Host California won nine out of 14 matches on the first day of the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships on Thursday at the Hellman Tennis Complex and Channing Tennis Courts. In main draw singles, seeded Golden Bear senior Andre Goransson, junior Billy Griffith, senior Filip Bergevi and freshman Bjorn Hoffmann all advanced to the round of 32.

With rain expected in the San Francisco Bay Area on Friday, the regional's main draw doubles round of 32 will be played indoors at the Broadway Tennis Center in Burlingame, some 28 miles from Berkeley. After considering the weather at that point, tournament officials will decide by 1 p.m. whether to move one round of main draw singles back to Cal or to play the singles round indoors. Friday's regional action will only include the main draw doubles round of 32 and the main draw singles round 32.

Thursday's action included two rounds of main draw singles and one round of main draw doubles.

On Thursday, the 17th-ranked and top-seeded Goransson earned an opening singles round of 128 bye and then quickly defeated Brian Lee of Saint Mary's, 6-1, 6-1, in the round of 64. After byes of their own, the third-seeded Griffith – who's ranked 61st – beat Eli Whittle of UC Davis, 6-4, 6-2, and the fifth-seeded and 77th-ranked Bergevi posted a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Pacific's Tadiwa Chinamo in the round of 64.

Hoffman, seeded 17th, beat Sacramento State's Izik Walsh, 6-3, 6-0, in the round of 128 and followed with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Santa Clara's Jesus Tapiador Barajas.

Cal sophomores Gunther Matta and Ryan Shen along with freshman Nic Barretto won in the singles round of 128, with Barretto topping Oregon's Ethan Young-Smith, 6-3, 6-3, Matta besting USF's Paul Giraud, 6-3, 6-0 and Shen beating Jackson Hawk, 6-2, 7-5.

But the three Bears lost in the next round, with Eastern Washington's Robert Dula – a co-17th-seed – defeating Barretto, 2-6, 6-2, 7-5, Gonzaga's Ruadhan O'Sullivan beating Matta, 6-1, 7-5, and co-17th-seed Brandon Sutter stopping Shen, 6-1, 6-3.

Earlier in the round of 128, Cal freshman Ryan Cardiff lost to San Francisco's Marco Barretto – Nic's brother – 6-3, 6-2.

In the doubles main draw round of 64, Cal's pair of Barretto and Matta defeated Calvin Jordaan and Nash Vollenweider of Saint Mary's, 8-6, while the two Ryans – Shen and Cardiff – lost to USF's Giraud and Oliver Poysti.

The more than 100 singles players and 50 doubles teams playing at the regional – which is one of 12 around the nation – are vying to win entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships. The indoor tournament will be held from Nov. 3-6 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York. The regional's main draw singles and main draw doubles champions will book tickets to New York.

The regional is scheduled to end on Monday.
