Kerr Sets Record Pace At Cal
This feature originally appeared in the football game program from the Utah-Cal game on Oct. 1.
Maddy Kerr's famous dad isn't the only person in the family setting records in the Bay Area.
While Steve Kerr led the Golden State Warriors to the best record in NBA history last season, his daughter has been putting her imprint on the Cal volleyball record book. As a freshman, she tied the school record for digs in a match with 33, and she entered the 2016 season with her sights on the Golden Bears' all-time career mark of 1,810.
Entering tonight's match against Arizona State at Haas Pavilion, Kerr has exactly 1,600 digs, good for second on Cal's all-time list. She also has three of the Bears' top-10 single-season dig marks of all time.
Kerr began the season needing 459 digs to equal the Cal career record, set by Jillian Davis from 2003-06. Kerr had exactly 459 last season.
"I never thought about it when I got here," Kerr said of the all-time digs mark. "I think it would be really cool to leave some sort of legacy, especially because our team hasn't necessarily been that successful since I've been here. It's still something I can work really hard to achieve."
After helping the Bears reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament as a freshman – a season in which she was named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team – Cal has struggled through a couple of difficult seasons. Kerr has served as team captain since her sophomore year and has done her best to help the Bears navigate through some trying times.
"I definitely have to be focused on my own play first," Kerr said. "I've learned that since I've gotten more responsibility – that I have to focus on my own stuff before I can really focus on other people. I need to help the team in my own way first."
Kerr was the No. 65 "Senior Ace" by PrepVolleyball.com coming out of Torrey Pines High School in San Diego. Although the last couple of seasons haven't gone how she would like on the court, her commitment and love for Cal never wavered.
"When I committed to come here, I was so young," she said. "I loved the school, but it really was all volleyball. I was super excited about that. But I am so thankful that I came to Cal also just for the school, because I love it. I wouldn't do anything different if I could do it over again. I love it here."
Kerr has also embraced the academic side of UC Berkeley. A double-major in Media Studies and Rhetoric, Kerr sports an impressive 3.76 cumulative GPA. Last season, she became just the second Cal volleyball student-athlete in program history to earn Pac-12 All-Academic First Team honors.
"Maddy really does exemplify the true meaning of a student-athlete," Cal coach
Rich Feller said. "She's outstanding in the classroom, she's an outstanding public presence for our program, she's done community service work. She's really a well-rounded human being – a young woman ready to go into the world after her time at Cal is finished."
