BURLINGAME, Calif. – California's Andre Goransson and Billy Griffith won in main draw doubles on Friday as the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships moved indoors to escape the rain in the San Francisco Bay Area. Playing at the Broadway Tennis Center, the third-seeded Golden Bear duo defeated Santa Clara's Jesus Tapiador Barajas and Kamran Khan, 8-2, in the round of 32.
 
The duo, which had a bye in Thursday's round of 64 in Berkeley, takes on Fresno State's Mantas Bugailiskis and Xander Veys in Saturday's round of 16. Cal sophomore Gunther Matta and freshman Nic Barretto took on Washington's ninth-seeded Gal Hakak and Jake Douglas on Friday but lost, 8-6, in the round of 32.
 
After Cal freshman Bjorn Hoffman and sophomore J.T. Nishimura had a round of 64 bye on Thursday, they advanced past Portland's Alex Wallace and Felix Fan, who withdrew with an injury on Friday. The Bears face Oregon's Ethan Young-Smith and Ty Gentry on Saturday.
 
Due to continued rain in Berkeley, the main draw singles round of 32 will be played indoors at the BTC as well as at Bay Club SF Tennis starting at 8:30 p.m. on Friday. Five matches will be played at the Burlingame site, while 11 matches will be played in the City. The doubles round of 32 and singles round of 32 will be the only regional matches played on Friday.
 
Cal captured all four of its singles matches on Friday night, with senior Filip Bergevi winning at Bay Club SF Tennis and the trio of Goransson, Hoffmann and Griffith winning at the Broadway Tennis Center. Bergevi, ranked 77th and seeded No. 5, defeated Bryce McKelvie of UC Davis, 7-5, 6-2.
 
Goransson, ranked 17th and seeded No. 1, dispatched Stanford's William Genesen, 6-2, 6-0. Griffith, the third seed at the regional who's ranked 61st, knocked off Santa Clara's co-17th seed Robert Seby, 6-2, 6-4, while Hoffmann, another co-17th-seed, held off Washington's Mitch Stewart, 7-6(3), 6-3. All four Bears advanced to Saturday's round of 16.
 
The singles and doubles players at the northwest regional – which is one of 12 around the nation – are vying to win entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships. The indoor tournament will be held from Nov. 3-6 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York. The regional's main draw singles and main draw doubles champions will book tickets to New York.
 
The regional is scheduled to end on Monday.
