WINDERMERE, Fla. – Cal (310-304 – 614, +38) tied for the second-best team improvement from the first round to the second but remained 15th at the conclusion of second-round action Monday at the prestigious Tavistock Collegiate Invitational hosted by North Texas and UCF at the par-72, 7,544-yard Isleworth Golf & Country Club.

Florida (283-277 – 560, -16) surged to a nine-stroke lead by outshooting all others in the 15-team field that includes five of the nation's top 10 teams by at least six shots Monday and also boasts second-round individual leader Alejandro Tosti (70-65 – 135, -9).

Tanner Hughes (76-76 – 152, +8) and freshman Devin Hua (77-75 – 152, +8) are Cal's top players on the leaderboard in a tie for 56th. William Aldred (76-77 – 153, +9), Ben Doyle (85-76 – 161, +17) and Alexander Wilson are the other players in the Cal lineup with Aldred tied for 62nd followed by Doyle in 73rd and Wilson in 75th.

"There is a reason why so many PGA TOUR golfers are members at Isleworth," said Walter Chun, Cal's Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men's Golf. "The golf course truly tests all aspects of your game, and Isleworth is exposing each of our players' weaknesses and shortcomings. We're only in October, so it's good for the team to get exposed by this major championships type golf course."

"If we are going to collectively improve from now until April, the players need to be honest with themselves on where they need to improve," Chun added. "One area that needs improvement is controlling their golf balls, working it right-to-left, left-to-right and playing in windy conditions. To play well here, one must control their ball flight rather than 'hope' to hit it at a certain spot."

Hua, who is playing in his first collegiate event, had the Golden Bears' top round Monday at three-over par 75. He recovered from a four-over par 40 on his first nine holes that included a triple-bogey on the par-three 11th by shooting two-under 35 on his final nine sparked by three birdies with one each on the par-five third, par-three fifth and par-four eighth. He would finish with four birdies as he also birdied his opening hole for the second consecutive round with a birdie on the par-four 10th.

"Devin is showing that he has the ability to play at a high level," Chun said. "He's still rough around the edges in terms of his course management, but if I were to pick a course that will help him learn fast how important course management is, it would be Isleworth."

The 2016 Tavistock Collegiate Invitational concludes with third and final-round play Tuesday. Tee times begin at 8 am EDT/5 am PDT with Cal starting at 9:15 am EDT/6:15 am PDT.
