BERKELEY – Back in action together for the first time since they won a major collegiate doubles title this fall, Filip Bergevi and Florian Lakat won their first match of the Berkeley Futures USTA Pro Circuit tournament on Tuesday at the Hellman Tennis Complex.

The California seniors captured the doubles crown at the Saint Francis Health System All-American Championships on Oct. 10 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

On Monday evening, the Bears defeated Jan Choinski and Naoki Nakagawa, 6-4, 6-3, at Newmark Stadium (court one) in the main draw's opening round of 16 to reach the quarterfinals. In the prior match on court one, Cal sophomore Gunther Matta and freshman Bjorn Hoffmann fell to the third-seeded duo of John Lamble and Bernardo Saraiva, 6-1, 6-1, in the round of 16.

In qualifying singles earlier in the day, Hoffman and J.T. Nishimura won to give Cal five Bears in main draw singles. Nishimura, a junior, topped Perry Gregg, 6-2, 7-6(5), and Hoffmann defeated the San Francisco's fourth-seeded Mert Zincirli, 6-2, 7-6(7), 6-2, to advance. Cal junior Billy Griffith pushed the top-seeded Austin Smith to three sets before falling 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.

Nishimura and Hoffmann join Bergevi, Lakat and senior Andre Goransson – who won the singles crown at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships at Hellman on Monday – in the main draw singles round of 32 on Tuesday.

The tournament begins on Wednesday with matches at 10 a.m. and is scheduled to end on Sunday.
