BERKELEY – California's Andre Goransson, Florian Lakat and Bjorn Hoffmann all advanced to the singles round of 16 on the third day of the Berkeley Futures USTA Pro Circuit tournament at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Goransson also paired with former Pacific player Sem Verbeek to win in the round of 16 in main draw doubles.
 
Goransson, the Golden Bear senior, defeated the fourth-seeded Jose Statham, 6-0, 6-4, in the day's opening match on court one at Hellman, while Hoffmann, his freshman teammate, beat Sebastian Bader, 7-5, 6-3, over on court three. Those wins set up a Thursday match between Goransson and Hoffmann on court one not before 2:30 p.m.
 
In the last Wednesday match, Lakat, another senior, was leading the fifth-seeded Takanyi Garanganga, 6-4, 4-3, when the latter withdrew from the court-one match with an injury. Lakat will face Bernardo Saraiva at 10 a.m. on Thursday.
 
Two Bears lost in the round of 32, as senior Filip Bergevi fell to second-seeded Kaichi Uchida, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4, on court three, while junior J.T. Nishimura dropped a 7-5, 6-1 results against Marcos Giron on court five.
 
When a Stanford duo withdrew from doubles, Goransson and Verbeek took their spot in a round of 16 match against Giron and Connor Farren. The new pair prevailed, 6-4, 6-4, on court five.
 
In the doubles quarterfinals on Thursday, Goransson and Verbeek will take on Statham and Joe Cooper, while Lakat and Bergevi face Connor Smith and Rhyne Williams. Both doubles matches will start not before 4 p.m. at Hellman.
