STANFORD, Calif. – Three Golden Bears moved into the singles round of 32 and three California pairs reached the doubles round of 32 on Friday at Stanford in the ITA Northwest Regional Championships presented by Oracle. Top-seeded Maegan Manasse won twice in singles in her first action of the 2016-17 season. Manasse and fellow Cal senior Denise Starr – the third-ranked duo in the nation – form the top seed at the regional and earned a first-round bye.
 
Manasse, a four-time All-American ranked seventh in singles, had a close match in the opening round of 128, edging Washington's Tami Grende, 7-6(3), 7-5. In the round of 64, she defeated Washington State's Guzal Yusupova, 7-5, 6-3.
 
Cal junior Karla Popovic, ranked 90th, and sophomore Olivia Hauger, ranked 86th, also advanced in singles. In the round of 64, Popovic, the fifth seed who's unbeaten this season, topped Portland's Radina Dimitrova, 6-3, 6-1, while the sixth-seeded Hauger defeated Washington's Miki Kobayashi, 6-1, 7-5.
 
Five Bears won in the round of 128 before falling in the second round. That group included newcomer Maya Jansen, who won two NCAA doubles championships at Alabama. Now a graduate student in Berkeley, she also made her Cal season debut on Friday at the regional. While she won her opener – a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Santa Clara's Madison Clarke – she then dropped a 6-1, 3-6, 7-6(3) result against Washington's Alexis Prokopuik.
 
In doubles, the third-seeded Hauger and Popovic also had a bye on Friday. Senior Stephane Lin and freshman Alexis Nelson did play in the round of 64 and beat Portland's Tatiana Grigoryan/Emily Soares, 8-5, though the duo of Jansen and sophomore Maria Smith lost to Emma Critser/Parminder Kaur of Saint Mary's, 8-3, in the opening round.
 
The five-day tournament ends on Tuesday, with the main draw singles and doubles champions qualifying for the upcoming USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in New York.
