BURLINGAME, Calif. – Five days after Andre Goransson beat Lucas Gomez in the Berkeley Futures semifinals, the California senior defeated the eighth-seeded pro again, 6-3, 7-6(1), this time in the round of 32 on Wednesday in the Broadway Tennis Center Futures USTA Pro Circuit event at the Broadway Tennis Center.
 
Goransson - who reached the singles and doubles finals at the Berkeley Futures - advanced to the round of 16 in Burlingame with his victory over the 468th-ranked Gomez.
 
Three more Golden Bears sought to join their teammate in the next round. But sophomore Gunther Matta lost to the 460th-ranked Jan Choinski, 6-1, 6-2, junior Billy Griffith fell to the 1528th-ranked Michael Zhu, 6-3, 6-4, and senior Florian Lakat retired from his match with Ruan Roelofse after winning the first set, 6-4, and trailing in the second, 1-0, on Wednesday.
 
Goransson will face Choinski in the singles round of 16 not before 1:30 p.m. on Thursday. In the doubles semifinals on Thursday, not before 3 p.m., the Cal pair of Lakat and senior Filip Bergevi will play the winner of Wednesday's match between the Stanford duo of Tom Fawcett and Michael Genender and the third-seeded team of Sam Barry and Peter Kobelt.
