BURLINGAME, Calif. – California's Andre Goransson made another deep tournament run in October – this time in the $25,000 Broadway Tennis Center Futures USTA Pro Circuit event – but that run ended on Friday in the singles quarterfinals. The Golden Bear lost to professional player Mico Santiago, 6-3, 6-7(1), 6-1, indoors at the Broadway Tennis Center.

The Cal senior has produced several impressive results this month. He won the singles title at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships on Oct. 17 at the Hellman Tennis Complex. In the Berkeley Futures pro tournament, Goransson played doubles with former Pacific player Sem Verbeek for the first time. They worked their way to the doubles final, though they lost to top-seeded pros Connor Smith and Rhyne Williams also at Hellman on Oct. 22. The next day, Goransson played in the Berkeley Futures singles final, falling against pro player Marcos Giron.

"Our guys have been incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to play in the Berkeley and Broadway Tennis Center Futures," Cal head coach Peter Wright said. "Four of our guys, Florian Lakat, Filip Bergevi, Bjorn Hoffman and Andre Goransson, were able to earn world ranking ATP points in singles and doubles. Andre clearly had an amazing run reaching the finals of singles and doubles in Berkeley and the quarterfinals of singles in Burlingame. This experience is incredible for the guys as they look at the prospect of playing on the pro tour in the future.

"I have to thank our tournament director for both events, Horacio Matta, and the Broadway Tennis Center for hosting the Broadway Tennis Center Futures. We hope to give our players these professional opportunities for many years to come."

Goransson will next join fellow seniors Bergevi and Lakat in competing at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Flushing Meadows, New York. The event, held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, will run from Nov. 3-6.

A product of Hollviken, Sweden, Goransson reached the singles championship match at national indoors last year. He lost in the final in Flushing Meadows, where he also claimed the tournament's Sportsmanship Award.
